Why Judo

The name Judo means the “gentle or yielding way”. Judo emphasizes the larger value of training in attack and defense so that it could be a way of life that all people could participate in and benefit from. At Sioux Falls Hapkido and Judo Club you will be training with people of all skill levels, and with different goals. We have Judokas (students of judo) that have won first place in the USA Judo Open and others who train simply because they love it. No matter what your goal is our Dojo has the capability to help you achieve it!

“I’ve had the opportunity to compete extensively and train throughout the USA and internationally. When I came to the Sioux Falls Hapkido and Judo Club, I was immediately impressed by the energy in the room. Since joining the club, I’ve taken home a gold medal at the national championships, a gold medal at US Open, and represented team USA at the World Masters Championships.” Jim S.

Our dojo and all of our students are members of USA Judo and the United States Judo Association (USJA). We compete in tournaments within these organizations and it is also how we train for our belt ranks and promotions. This helps us to maintain high standards for our Judokas and dojo in every aspect.

All of our Judokas are required to sign up for the USJA in order to join our dojo. If you are a new student and are looking to sign up simply hit the USJA Badge!

The Benefits of

Martial Arts

Physical Conditioning

Through gradual and progressive exercise, the student learns to overcome present limitations in a safe and intelligent manner. Students quickly discover new vitality and energy. Improved strength and flexibility. More endurance and coordination. Natural weight control (adding, losing, or rearranging).

Mental Discipline

The mind needs to learn discipline as well as the body. Students of the Martial Arts will develop better goal setting skills, positive mental attitudes, and a positive self -image. Better listening and thinking skills. Longer attention span. Better grades in school. Increased mental and physical awareness.

Emotional Control

The practice of Martial Arts provides an outlet for the stress of everyday life. We learn to channel our negative energy into positive things. Emotions, especially anger and hatred, can cloud the mind preventing the student from thinking clearly. Only when we can control ourselves, can we hope to control what happens around us. Students learn that violence is not an acceptable expression of one’s emotions.

Social Skills

Your own self-image determines how you feel about yourself. By achieving short and long term goals the student develops self-confidence and a sense of self-worth. The instructor expects good manners and maintains the traditional standards of respect at all times. We firmly believe in doing our best for all. When you feel good about yourself, you feel good about others. Positive self-image and self-confidence will prevent more fights than any physical technique or weapon.
